Open vs Closed Rhinoplasty
18th July 2022

Open rhinoplasty and closed rhinoplasty – both techniques aim to reshape and adjust the nose’s appearance to bring it in harmony with the rest of the face. These nose jobs are widely used to correct aesthetic issues such as bulbousness, a hooked tip, deviated septum, etc. Though both processes are practically similar, they use different incision techniques to suit the nose problem. This blog discusses the difference between open and closed rhinoplasty and explains which procedure is the best for you.
What is open rhinoplasty?
Open rhinoplasty, or external rhinoplasty, is a procedure that involves making an external incision (made outside the nose) to access the cartilage and bone of the nose. It’s called “open” because the skin of the nose is folded upward to provide broad exposure to the structures underneath.
What is closed rhinoplasty?
Closed rhinoplasty, also referred to as endonasal rhinoplasty or scarless rhinoplasty, is performed inside the patient’s nose to correct nasal symmetry. In this procedure, all the incisions are completely hidden within the nostrils.
Advantages of open rhinoplasty
The advantages of open rhinoplasty are as follows:
- It provides more clear access to the surgical site
- It allows the surgeon to measure the anatomy of the nose
- It makes intricate grafting possible
Advantages of closed rhinoplasty
The advantages of closed rhinoplasty are as follows:
- Less swelling during recovery
- Less to no downtime depending on the procedure
- It doesn’t leave any visible scars

What are the main differences between open rhinoplasty and closed rhinoplasty?
Approach
An open rhinoplasty includes two main incisions and one more trans-columellar incision that connects the two across the columella. On the other hand, closed rhinoplasty consists of only two incisions.
Duration
The open rhinoplasty is a little longer than the closed rhinoplasty.
Procedure difficulty
Closed rhinoplasty is much more difficult because it involves operating from inside the nose. On the other hand, an open rhinoplasty has a small bridging incision, making the operation relatively easier.
Invasiveness
A closed rhinoplasty is much less invasive than open rhinoplasty. The closed procedure generally requires a shorter recovery and causes less swelling.
